What would you be in the old days?

Toshia and I were watching old-fashioned romantic comedies like Emma and Sense and Sensibility when we started discussing what we would be back in those days with our current temperment and personality. Toshia said she thought she would fit right in, but probably be the daughter of a merchant rather than the ladies of society that are portrayed in those movies. I said I thought I would be a harlot. Not that that is particularily what I would have chosen, but being a single mother in those days and with the feistiness I have, I don't think they would have allowed me to be anything other. At least I would have one nice dress and I could have stayed in brothel. This is definately not saying what we would choose to be-I mean why give up the parties and the dresses and the fortune?
